I know, that should be hyphenated…sue me.
So, you people would like to know how my surgery turned out. You’re in luck, I finally feel like writing and telling you. Should we start with the back story? Eh, why not?
Time for the short version… Since I was about 5 or 6, I’ve worn glasses. At about the same time they noticed that I had a lazy eye. We worked on it while growing up using either patches over the good eye once in a while or staring at balls on a string. The balls are complicated than that, but they hurt my eyes then and they hurt them now to think about it. For quite a while I could concentrate and try to not make the lazy eye wander, but as I’ve gotten older I haven’t been able to control it as well. So, this summer I decided to finally have something done about it. I went to the eye doctor to see if surgery could help, they said it could, and here we are a while later and week after the surgery.
Last Monday I went in for the surgery. Officially it’s called a strabismus muscle surgery for an ocular misalignment due to extraocular muscle imbalance. I prefer to call it my front-end alignment.
Anyway, all went pretty good… I am definitely not a fan of needles, though. When I got stuck with the IV needle I nearly lost my breakfast. Thankfully, I wasn’t allowed to eat for 12 hours before the surgery, so there was no breakfast to lose. A few minutes, a couple swigs through the IV of sleepy juice, and then another 45 minutes later and I was awake. Well, apparently I was awake, I really have no idea how I got back into the chair. Anyways, since I was asleep for the surgery, I can’t tell you about it. I can tell you that rather than the original plan of operating on both eyes, only my right eye was worked on. Basically what he did was detach the muscle from the eye and then reattach it so things would be in line.
Ready for pictures? Well, here we go. To see where we’re at now, we have to go back to see where we’ve been. So Exhibit A is a photo I actually took of myself back in September when I was working the overnight shift. I was bored, and I honestly never take pictures of myself. So the fact that you people are getting a bunch of pictures of me should make you feel special… or constipated, I haven’t decided which way yet.
So ready for the results? There’s really no difference between these two pictures except to show the redness in the operated eye. They said it could take anywhere from 3 weeks to a few months for it all to clear away. I’ve got drop I’m supposed to put in twice a day for the first ten days. Those have been going fine, although tonight, I apparently got them targeted so well into my eye that I can actually feel it in my sinuses. That is not a particularly pleasant feeling.

So, what should I expect with my new front end alignment? To be honest, I’m not sure. I’ve already discovered that this weekend I can now get car sick pretty easily, and even just walking through a crowd of people or a long narrow hallway can give me motion sickness. I can’t wait for my first ride at an amusement park… The blurriness that I’d had last week has mostly gone already, I’m only finding that I have some trouble focusing on text that’s close up or when I’m tired. The same goes for double vision. The same goes for double vision. I guess that means I’m tired of writing the update. I’ll probably give more details later. Wednesday I’m going back to work for the first time. I did actually stop in for a few minutes on Friday to pick up my portable hard drive, and to show the eyes to a couple people, but it should be interesting to see what the general reaction of people is… both of the alignment and the now constant hangover status of my right eye.
